As the title suggests, this is a presentation all about our experiences with JShell (aka the Java Shell Tool), a powerful Read-Evaluate-Print-Loop (REPL) tool available in Java Development Kit (JDK) since version 9. Many languages contain such a command-line REPL tool that evaluates declarations, statements, and expressions as they are entered and immediately shows the results, and now we have one in Java. JShell introduces a full-fledged yet straightforward REPL to Java, useful in many cases, from learning new Java language features or APIs, through quick prototyping and debugging without the need for developing complex classes, all the way to educational purposes in introductory programming courses in online courses and at colleges and universities. Together with vars introduces in JDK 10, JShell became even easier to use and can be immensely helpful for trying some new functionalities or running a smaller project's parts. With JShell developers, educators, and students can quickly run some code without starting a full-blown IDE and/or creating a new project; however, JShell can also be used as an addition to IntelliJ IDEA, Eclipse, NetBeans or elsewhere. We intend to reveal to you some of the great usages of JShell related to support for prototyping and learning.

Branko Mihaljević, autor
Branko Mihaljević is an educator, consultant, manager, and entrepreneur, dealing with Java since 1996. After 12 years of teaching at UNIZG FER, where he received dipl. ing. (MS), DSM, mr. sc., and dr. sc. (PhD), a few years at Algebra and VERN' colleges, as well as seven years as a co-owner and CTO of a development company, he is currently a Senior Lecturer and Research Assistant at RIT Croatia, one of the global locations of Rochester Institute of Technology, and leading his software consulting company. He gained experience as a consultant, software architect, project manager, development lead, and researcher on various projects in the financial, telecom, traffic, public health, and satellite systems sectors. He is the author of numerous scientific and professional papers, conference presentations, and popular Java-related articles. He worked on many research and professional projects, as well as delivered various university courses and professional workshops, and authored many educational materials. He is the president of the Croatian Java User Association (HUJAK).
Aleksander Radovan, koautor
Aleksander Radovan graduated from the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, and is currently finishing the PhD program. He has more than 15 years of experience with Java, and is currently employed as the Director of Software Delivery at BISS. As a Senior Lecturer, he is teaching at several university colleges a number of popular courses in programming and information systems, mostly based on Java and related technologies. He is the author of many educational materials and courses, as well as numerous conference papers. His research interests include areas such as artificial intelligence, genetic algorithms, robotics, and software development. He is also the president of the Committee for Education at the Croatian Java User Association (HUJAK).
