Apache Kafka has become one of the most popular pieces of technology in a modern service oriented application stack. While it's extremely powerful, and reliable, it is far from easy to start using it, and learn its behaviour and configuration enough to be able to use it with confidence. In this talk we'll share our experience using Kafka as a central point of a high performance event processing application. You'll learn about how to design your application to get the most out of Kafka, and what operational challenges you'll encounter running Kafka, especially in the cloud. We'll share our experience with running Kafka in Kubernetes on GCP.We'll also show how to make good use of Kafka Streams - additional layer around Kafka Client API which simplifies the development of event processing applications.

About speaker
Aleš Justin, author
Aleš Justin was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia and graduated with a degree in mathematics from the University of Ljubljana. He fell in love with Java long ago and has spent most of his time developing information systems, ranging from customer service to energy management. He joined Red Hat in 2006 to work full time on the Microcontainer project, later founded CapeDwarf project, while still contributing to Cloud Enablement, ApplicationServer, Weld, Ceylon and many other JBoss projects. He's currently freelancing, crafting distributed and highly concurrent Spring(Boot), Kafka, Infinispan, GCP/K8s, etc apps.
Marko Štrukelj, coauthor
Marko Štrukelj is a software developer with two decades of experience in Java. He was involved in several open-source projects under JBoss.org / Red Hat umbrella – like JBoss AS, Gatein portal server, LiveOak, and Keycloak. Before joining RedHat in 2009 he had worked many years for an early slovenian startup company Parsek, doing development on various commercial implementation projects – from online retail, and logistics, to telecom, banking, and insurance. He's currently freelancing, focusing on scalable cloud applications with Kubernetes and Kafka.
