If you have ever tried to help an organisation adopt cloud, or change it’s business model from selling on premises licenses to delivering Software as a Service, you’ll know that it is not just a case of re - hosting and setting up remote access.Cloud applications need to be able to scale rapidly. Cloud businesses need to ensure that they are not paying for more infrastructure than they need.For Java developers one of the most promising approaches to reconciling these requirements is “native images” or Ahead Of Time (AOT) compilation. The JVM bytecode of the application is further compiled to produce a native executable.This executable is smaller, starts faster and uses less resources than the Java form of the application.In this talk, I will discuss Java AOT and when it makes sense to use it. I will also demonstrate how to use Oracle GraalVM to create native images.

Ewan Slater, author
I started out as a research scientist and then drifted into IT.
These days I'm the Technical Director of Java & GraalVM product marketing at Oracle with over twenty years of experience in the technology industry and a lot less hair.
I joined Oracle when they acquired Thor Technology in 2005. I intended to stay for six months and I'm still here. I'm currently focused on helping Oracle's customers and partners adopt a cloud-native approach to Java development.
Outside of work I enjoy cycling, cooking and the countryside. I contribute to a number of open source projects, a former organizer of the DevEast conference in the UK and a member of the Ipswich & Suffolk Technology Network (ISTN).
Aleksandar Prokopec, coauthor
I am a principal researcher at Oracle Labs, working on the Graal language infrastructure project. My research is focused on composable, scalable and modular programming language abstractions for large-scale distributed computing, as well as implementation of frameworks, languages and runtimes for distributed programming.
Previously, I worked at Google on cloud computing infrastructure and big data analytics for Google Maps. Before that, I was working as a research assistant in the School of Computer and Communication Sciences at the EPFL in Switzerland, in the LAMP laboratory on Scala development under the supervision of dr. Martin Odersky, where I received a doctoral degree in 2014.
